On May 21, 2024, in Toledo, Ohio, an incredible milestone was achieved by Clementina Gonzalez Ponce, an 82-year-old woman originally from Guadalajara, México. After a nearly 30-year wait to receive permanent residency, Clementina became a U.S. citizen. Read her story.

Through a $1 Million HUD grant, ABLE launched the Tenant Eviction Relief Program—a much-needed rural-based program—to assist underserved communities in Allen, Auglaize, Clark, Champaign, Logan, Mercer, and Miami counties. ABLE and the American Immigration Council share a joint report on racial profiling activities by Border Patrol at the U.S.-Canadian border near Port Clinton, Ohio.

Reintroduced earlier this summer in the Ohio legislature, House Bill 206 proposes to change the rules about expelling students from school, allowing long – potentially unending – deprivations of learning. ABLE has joined other advocacy and civil rights groups opposing HB 206.

In a partnership with Clark County Juvenile Court and Springfield City Schools, ABLE is assisting chronically absent kids and their families through an innovative initiative called the SUCCESS Program.

ABLE has partnered with the Vera Institute of Justice to launch the Unaccompanied Children Project. Funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, the project is an expansion of our decades-long commitment to serving the varied legal needs of immigrants in Ohio.

ABLE has joined several advocacy and legal services organizations to file an amicus brief in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Ohio’s school voucher program.
